How to Use a Capo 5 Useful Tips Suzy S. Have you ever been frustrated with the key of a song, and wanted to change it instantly without having to transpose everything and learn new chords? Well, now you can! Learning how to use a capo can be a lifesaver, especially if you enjoy singing along or if you frequently work with vocalists. For an easy, hands-on way to see how a capo works, try playing a normal C chord. Place your capo on the first fret. Then play the same position you just played youll notice its now half-step higher (C#). Next, move the capo to the second fret. Voila now you have the key of D. See where were going with this? As you experiment more with your capo, youll get better at recognizing which chords youre actually playing. In the meantime, consider keeping a capo chart nearby to cross-reference. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind: Check your tuning. Clamping the capo down on your strings sometimes causes them to go out of tune, so youll want to tune your guitar again when youre done using the capo. This is especially applicable for electric guitars, since the strings are so much lighter. Always place the capo slightly behind the fret never directly on top of it. Experiment with different types of capos. Spring-loaded (or trigger) capos are a popular choice, which are easier to use than a c-clamp capo. The latter type requires you to manually tighten the capo against the fret, whereas the former can be taken off quickly and with one hand. Another type is a toggle capo, which is generally the least expensive, but is also very flimsy. Shubb and Kyser are two well-known brands to check out. Use a partial capo for alternate tunings. A partial (or cut) capo covers only some of the strings. It gives off a distinct drone sound often used in Celtic music, and it also allows you to explore with alternate tunings, like Drop-D. Dont be afraid to experiment and play around with it! Watch for buzzing. If you have the capo in place, but your strings are still buzzing, try adjusting the capos position until you get a clean sound. This is a situation familiar to many K-12 students, who seem to freeze when they see a math problem. Their research shows that the anxiety of math teachers and parents can rub off on their students, ultimately affecting theirlearning. Fortunately, proven classroom methods have also been tested to reduce students' anxiety of doing mathematics. These tips include: Focus on learning the process behind math concepts, rather than merely trying to get a right answer. Similarly, don't refer to the textbook's answer key very often. Instead, value the problem and have students arrive at their own answers. Encourage every student to work on the problem on paper. This is in contrast to more traditional methods where one student raises his/her hand, blurts out the answer, and then the teacher promptly moves on to the next question. What is Burns Night Some of you might be wondering what this ‘Burns Night’ thing is your English teacher’s been going on about. Maybe people are so cold by the end of January that all they can think about is a warm log fire? Is it related to Bonfire Night perhaps? Think again… Burns Night is the birthday of the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). Although it’s more often celebrated in Scotland, there has been a surge in celebrations all over the UK. The most important part of the evening is the Supper: starters and pudding course vary, but the essential component of the meal is the famous haggis, brought in by the chef to the sound of bagpipes. English tutors using Burns poetry Tutors and English teachers often use Burns to introduce children to poetry, as many of the poems are short and funny. It’s also a great introduction to the different dialects historically spoken in the UK â€" after getting to grips with Burns’ style of English, Shakespeare’s poems might not seem so difficult! Burns night Supper: First the Selkirk Grace by Robert Burns: “Some hae meat and canna eat, And some wad eat that want it. But we hae meat and we can eat, So let the Lord be thankit.” When the haggis has been brought in, the host recites Burns’ ‘Ode to the Haggis’, usually stabbing the dish with his dirk (a small dagger) and ending with a toast to the haggis. It is traditionally served with mashed potatoes (tatties) and mashed turnips (neeps). Burns night Speeches The tradition of Burns night speeches can be used by tutors and teachers to introduce young children to public speaking. Immortal memory â€" a toast to Robert Burns, with a short speech reflecting on the poet Toast to the Lassies â€" the male speaker’s view on women! He has to be careful what he says because the next person’s turn is the lassie. My personal Pinterest has 15 boards, ranging from fashion and beauty, to typography, graphic design, and prints. 2. Theres an endless amount of DIY tutorials from bloggers all over the site. These tutorials have saved me from moments of boredom and I have actually learned how to do something rather than just talk about it. 3. Along with DIY tutorials, Pinterest has thousands of makeup and hair tutorials repinned from assorted beauty and magazine blogs. I enjoy fooling around with makeup, so my beauty board is definitely one of my most expansive. 4. THE FOOD. Goodness gracious, Ive seen the best and most creative cuisine boards on Pinterest. Although Ive yet to make anything, I still like to pretend Im a foodie. And honestly, who has made that many food pins on their food boards? 5. If Im ever needing inspiration for a piece of jewelry or clothing that Im making, Im sure to browse through Pinterest. The best of crafting, design, and practically everything artsy has been compiled onto Pinterest in the form of small, clickable, square photos. Most pins still have the link from the original blog post. 6. Although Pinterest is highly dominated by women, theres still cool stuff for the boys! Mens fashion, technology, and cooking could be helpful to check out, gentlemen [hint-hint, cough-cough, wink-wink]. Give it a try; it could become your newest, positive addiction. 7. Theres a little something for everyone. Whether youre a quote junkie, a Harry Potter nerd, or the next Vera Wang, Pinterest is the place to go to just let your mind wander or to learn something interesting.
